May Day
May Day is celebrated on the 1st of May every year, to commemorate the International Workers/Labours Day which has historic significance about the life of the workers around the world.
It is a public holiday as workers choose to not work on that day. International Labours day takes its origin from the US labour movement in the late 19th century. The history of the movement dates back to May 1, 1886. On this day several labour unions across the US went on strike, demanding a standard workday of eight hours.
On May 4th there was bloodshed in Chicago's Haymarket Square. A bomb thrown by a revolutionist led to the deaths of a dozen people (including several police officers) and the injury of over 100 people.
Labour Day is celebrated on May 1 in many countries around the world
and it is still often a day for protests and rallies.
In recent years, the celebration, of this day has taken a new turn, where and trade unions demand to safeguard their interests and give the economic reform a humane face.
In India and a lot of other countries in the world, 1st of May is observed as a public holiday. Yesterday was International Labours Day, which is a tribute to all of us labourers who keep building our nations continuously without any breaks all over the world.
